Assignment 2: Pre-Production Practical

"A Boro Dream"

Location: Outside the Riverside Stadium
Actors: Myself (Male)
Camera Man: Jamie Trewhitt

Production Diary

To start my Assignment I created a Production Diary. This is to keep track and stick to my deadlines of the pre-production, production and post production of my short movie. I created this on Microsoft Excel.

Story: I am wanting to make my dream come true by playing for Middlesbrough FC. I start off playing football at an empty field, to playing at the Riverside. It will start with me doing kick-ups in a field and practicing my skills then transitioning to me standing in the Riverside stadium about to make my debut for Middlesbrough FC.

It will begin with an opening shot of me walking onto a local field. Fading in and out with me in the field doing kick ups, and practicing random skill. I will then pick up the football with the camera moving closer to me, and doing a 360 angle around me standing still. It will then transition from me in the field, and still spinning to me standing on the edge of the pitch at the Riverside Stadium.

Spider Diagram

Here is a spider diagram i made to help me think of my idea's such as what characters i am using, my location, the duration and some of the things i will be doing when in shot of the camera.

Equipment Booking Form

Today I submitted my booking form, this is so i can hire the equipment i need for when i film my movie. I only need a Camera because no audio will be captured in the movie.

I then emailed the Riverside Stadium's commercial department asking if  I can have permission to have access inside the stadium so i can shoot some of my movie.

Asking for permission to film

Script for A Boro's Dream

This is the script for "A Boro Dream" showing what I should be doing when playing the part of my character Ricky Boggajohnson. Then it shows what angles the Camera man should be filming.

Risk Assessment

I then created a Risk Assessment for "A Boro Dream" this is so if there any risks where i will be filming my movie i know that the procedures i have to take to be safe. My movie doesn't have many risks due to it only being short, and i created this on Microsoft Excel.

Stop Motion Animation Assignment

Stop Motion Animation Assignment

This is my assignment about animation. I am going to be doing a model based animation, where i will be creating my own characters in model form. I will have two characters, one called Barry and one called Tokyo Joe. Tokyo Joe is a human eating monster, who loves to crawl around and eat people. The whole Animation is where Barry is walking down his street, and he hears about a monster called Tokyo Joe killing anyone in his sights. Tokyo Joe see's Barry and chases him. He then catches up with him and Tokyo Joe kills Barry, by eating him and swallowing him.

My animation will start with Barry walking down his street, as he is on his way to the park. He doesn't make it to the park as he see's the town monster start crawling towards him. Tokyo Joe finds Barry walking down the street. Barry starts walking back towards his house, Tokyo Joe then chases him and jumps on him to eat him. He eats his body and Tokyo Joe slides off down the road to end the animation.

When i come to creating my Animation i will need plain cardboard for a background so there is a plain background. I will create a human clay character, and a monster clay character. The monster will be a snake like orange clay character with a large mouth to eat people. The animation will be 20 Seconds long, i will need to take 750 Photo's to create my animation.

My animation will be very similar to Wallace and Gromit as it will be a model based clay animation. The characters will look similar as i am creating a human character.

I then created a Script which makes it easier for me to know what I am fully doing when it comes to filming and shooting my Animation. I created the script in Microsoft Word.

Backgrounds

This is one of the backgrounds i will be using for my animation as in the animation the character will walk down his street. As he spots the enemy Tokyo Joe sliding down his street.

30 Second Animation Complete

I printed my background out and taped it to a plain white wooden board. I stood it up and positioned the camera i used which was a Hue flexible HD Classroom Camera. I then placed Barry in the frame and took shots of him walking down the street and spinning around until Tokyo Joe appeared slithering down the street and started to eat Barry and then walked off. The whole Animation was 30 seconds long then i edited the video in Adobe Premiere Pro and added music to create an atmosphere and feeling when watching it and added credits at the end.

Creating My Animation Questionnaire

I created my questionnaire on SurveyMonkey, i added five questions to get feedback from my 30 second animation i created.

https://www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/PGB93KM

Feedback

I think my animation was brilliant. I spent a lot of time planning the animation, by creating and thinking of a story line which was very difficult trying to think of a scenario as i have never done anything like this before. I then had to design my characters that will be appearing in the Animation. For me there was two different characters, and it taken me a long time to think of a design and create. I then found a background for my movie, and then filmed it which taken a lot longer than i expected. Overall it was a lengthy project, but in the end and watching it when it's all completed with music. It was defiantly worth creating, and i think it is brilliant.

Looking at the feedback from my survey I created on Survey Monkey the feedback was amazing. I am very happy with the results from the survey, and very happy people enjoyed my animation after the time I put into creating it. The feedback showed that people really enjoyed the background, i thought it was a great choice because it was a bright colored background which made the characters stand out. People enjoyed the story line of my animation, which was a simple story line but very effective and entertaining. People also enjoyed the characters I created and used in my animation, and also thought the quality of the animation was good.

When it comes to improving my animation, question where people could choose what i should improve on it was the quality. I can improve the quality of my animation by either using a different choice of camera or get a more stable and better quality tripod to help the camera remain in the same place and the same level throughout the animation.

Local Motion Assignment

This is a production company called Local Motion, the scheme is about promoting different ways to to take transport. Such as walking, cycling or taking the bus or taking the train.

We used a MC2000 Camera, to capture video footage. We had to learn how to work the camera by placing it on our shoulder and recording footage. Me, Jake and Owen recorded footage of classmate Declan and created into a David Attenborough style documentary video.

Before that we also used an Audio Device to record short interviews with classmates but we were already very familiar with this device.

We are going to go out into small groups and record some Vox Pop's where we interview members of the college about public transport so we can understand when and how they use it.

The five questions we will ask are:

1. How often do you use cars?

2. How long do you spend on a typical journey?

3. How many times a week?

4. How often do you use public transport?

5. How often do you walk or cycle?

A Runner In TV/Film Industry

Runner In TV/Film Industry

A Runner is used by the producer of the TV Show/Film and by other production staff. There job is to basically help out whenever people need help during production and sometimes post production. There roles depend on where the location they are helping out are. For example if its in an office, the roles they might be doing is answering phone calls, printing things out, filling paperwork and making drinks for workers.
The pay for being a Runner is not good. It is low pay as if your a freelancer you get paid on an hourly basis which is usually a little bit more than minimum wage about £7.00 but if you are a post production runner you will get a salary which can range from 10,000 a year to 20,000 and sometimes people do it for free as they use it as a way to get up the rankings working in the TV/Film Industry. You also don't need much experience to become a Runner. You will need to have an interest in the Media Industry so you at least know the basics of the TV/Film industry.
You also don't need many skills to become a Runner either apart from having the correct attitude to work as a Runner and that you are an organize person.
Some of the companies that hire Runner's are:
  • IMG Media
  • Thames
  • Outline Productions
  • BigTalk
  • Film4
  • The Mill
  • Deluxe

Pixilation Animation

Pixilation is a stop motion technique where live actors are used as a frame-by-frame subject in an animated film, by repeatedly posing while one or more frame is taken and changing pose slightly before the next frame or frames. The actor becomes a kind of living stop motion puppet.

Some of the movies/TV Shows that feature Pixilation:
Angry Kid
Sesame Street
Tetsu: The Iron Man
Jared Goldberg's Mister G Meets The Biker Babes

Here is another example where a live actor has been used to create a animation.

Early Animation

Zeotrope is an example of a pre-film animation. It is round drum with lots of images each are slightly different than the other one. The drum has several slits in it. Whoever is viewing it would then spin it and look through the slits. It would give the illusion that the picture is moving and causing a animation.

Phenakistoscope was the first widespread animation that created a fluent illusion of motion. The phenskistoscope can be compared to a GIF animation as it has a short duration and plays as a loop.

Mutoscope was an early motion picture device it was similar to Thomas Edison’s kinetoscope. It did not project on a screen but provided viewing to only one person at a time. The system quickly dominated the coin-in-the-slot peep show business.

Time Lapse

Examples Of A Time Lapse

A time lapse is a where you set a camera in a location, and take a photo now and then depending on what you are making a time lapse of. You could take a photo every five minutes, to every hour to every day. In this case it would be most likely to take a photo every hour as it is showing a large building in New York been built.

Here is another example of a time lapse, here is it shows a pint of beer that has been left. People do this a lot with food and drink products to see what happens after been left for days, to answer questions like will it go mouldy? or what will it look like? With this time lapse it has been took daily and the beer ended up going mouldy.
