Early Animation

Zeotrope is an example of a pre-film animation. It is round drum with lots of images each are slightly different than the other one. The drum has several slits in it. Whoever is viewing it would then spin it and look through the slits. It would give the illusion that the picture is moving and causing a animation.

Phenakistoscope was the first widespread animation that created a fluent illusion of motion. The phenskistoscope can be compared to a GIF animation as it has a short duration and plays as a loop.

Mutoscope was an early motion picture device it was similar to Thomas Edison’s kinetoscope. It did not project on a screen but provided viewing to only one person at a time. The system quickly dominated the coin-in-the-slot peep show business.
